scarf by Katherine Burgess

Katherine Burgess.

Scarf by Katherine Burgess
This may be called a “Tuck-in or a Bow-knot” scarf.
This little scarf uses less than 50 grams of knitting worsted. You can knit it in any type of yarn, but for an adult, I prefer worsted weight.
Using 4.5 mm straight needles, cast on 3 sts.
Row 1: Increase 1 st in the first st. K to end of row.
Repeat 1st row to 24 sts on needle.
K 19 rows in garter st.
To make slot: #K1, slip next st onto a stitch holder, keeping this stitch at the back of the work.
Repeat from # to end of row.
Stitches are divided, half on needle and half on stitch holder.
Working on stitches on needle, work 16 rows in k1, p1 ribbing. Break yarn, and leave these sts on a spare needle.
Slip stitches from holder and work 16 rows in k1, p1 ribbing. Do not break yarn.
Next row: (To close slot and increase stitches). #K tog 1 stitch from needle and 1 stitch from spare needle. Knit next stitch from front needle, then next stitch from back needle. (This increases 1 stitch.)
Repeat from # until there are 2 stitches left on each needle. (K tog one stitch from each needle) twice. 17 stitches on needle.
K even in garter stitch until work measures about 12 inches from slot closing. (I tend not to measure this, but to wrap it around my neck to make sure that it is long enough when stretched slightly.)
Next row: #K1, K2tog
Repeat from # to last two sts. K2. (12 sts)
Work 16 rows in K1, P1 ribbing.
Next row: Increase 1 st in each st across row.
K 19 rows garter stitch.
Next row: K1, K2tog, K to end of row.
Repeat this row to 3 stitches on needle. Cast off.
Sew in ends.

One must have the desire, determination and patience in mastering and understanding crochet.

Keep in mind that understanding crochet patterns is not at all as complicated as they seem to appear. Once you understand the basic abbreviations then you are on the road to making your very first masterpiece.

All crochet pieces and projects start with a “slip knot”. With your palm facing you, position the tip of the yarn crosswise on your right hand palm from the right going to the left and then back around so that it crosses over your right palm again and laying the yarn across the tip of the very first yarn strand.

Starting from the top to the bottom of the yarn, reach underneath both ends then draw up the “longest strand”. Insert now the crochet hook in the loop you have created and then tighten it to fasten the knot.

The very basic crochet stitches are single crochet (sc); chain (ch); double crochet (dc); half double crochet (hdc); and treble crochet (tr).

Crete the “foundation chain stitch” or ch. Having the “slip knot” on the hook, you have to do “yarn over (yo)” by way of taking your hook all around the “long” yarn tip starting from left to the right and then pull the loop past through the prevailing loop that is already on your hook. When you continue the process, you can make many chains, as long as what the pattern requires.
1. “Chain stitch” (ch). Beginning with a single loop, hook the yarn then and draw it through, making one chain. Repeat when needed to make more.

2. “Slip stitch” (sl or st). Insert the hook into chain stitch, and yarn over. Pull the yarn throughout the chain and also the “loop on the hook”.

3. “Single crochet” (sc). Insert the hook into the chain stitch, and yarn over and then pull through the chain making “2 loops on hook”. “Yarn over” and then draw up through both the loops.
6. “Yarn over 6”. Pull through the 2 loops. Now Yarn over again and then pull through the 2 loops once more.

7. “Triple crochet” (tr). Yarn over two times and then insert the hook in the chain and yarn over once more and then pull the yarn through the chain, making “4 loops on hook”. Then “yarn over and pull through 2 loops”. Now yarn over then “pull through 2 loops” once more. Yarn over then “pull through the last 2 loops”.

Here is a simple scarf pattern for beginners:

Strat with Chain 15 – meaning you should make 15 chain stitches.

“Row 1, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea of next 13 chs, ch 1 (to turn). (14 sc)”

In doing a single crochet into the “second chain from the hook”, do not anymore add the chain found on the “hook”. Only count the very first chain which attached to the hook.

“Row 2, sc in ea sc across, then ch 1, to turn. (14 sc)”

Do a single crochet stitch in every single crochet stitch across. If the pattern does not instruct to do one loop only, it is presumed that you crochet in “both loops of the stitch”, inserting your hook underneath the top loops “of the stitch” so to start creating “the next single crochet”.

This pattern requires you to work in the 2 loops of every “single crochet” for the second row and all the additional rows.

For the additional rows, you need to do the second row, until such time when you have already made the scarf’s length that is ideal to you.

“Last Row, sc in ea sc across. (14 sc)”

Do a “single crochet” in every single crochet going across and never make a “chain 1 at the end of the row”.
End. Leaving some length of the yarn to secure and weave the end, “cut the yarn” and weave the ends.

There you are, knitting a gauge swatch just like everyone says you must, only you don't know what it's telling you. If the pattern wants a gauge of 5 stitches per inch, but your swatch has a gauge of 6 1/4 stitches per inch, do you know what to do? If you need fewer stitches per inch, what size needle should you try next?

Fewer stitches per inch requires a larger needle size.

So if you used a size 4 needle for your 6 1/4 stitch swatch and you want 5 stitches per inch, change up a couple needle sizes, to maybe a size 6. See what happens when you knit with that size. If your pattern wants a gauge of 7 stitches per inch and your swatch has 6 1/4 stitches per inch, what do you do? You need more stitches per inch, so what size needle should you try next?

More stitches per inch requires a smaller needle size.

If you want 7 stitches per inch instead of the 6 1/4 stitches your swatch has, try knitting with a needle a size or two smaller. See if that gets you gauge.

Two other factors besides needle size can influence your gauge.

Your state of mind while knitting is one factor. If you're tense, you'll knit more tightly than if you're relaxed--or under the influence of a glass of wine to get you through the gauge swatch trauma.

The other factor is the material your needles are made of. The way some yarns slide along metal needles may give you great gauge, but other yarns will be so slippery, your stitches may pop off the needle in a worrisome way. To compensate, you may knit more tightly, but that doesn't get rid of the problem and may cause hand cramps.

Switch from metal to wooden or plastic needles and see if the knitting goes easier and gets better gauge. Or if your yarn grabs your needles and won't slide for easy knitting, switch from wooden or plastic to metal.

Here's a fast, easy gauge swatch trick.

Knit and yarn designer Cheryl Oberle has a gauge swatch trick to tell you what size needle you need like magic. Cast on 30 stitches, knit up your swatch and measure across the entire swatch. If the size needle you used doesn't get gauge with your yarn, going up or down one size will make the swatch bigger or smaller by exactly one-half inch. It doesn't matter if you knit your swatch in stockinette, ribbing, cables, or lace.

So what, you say?

Well, since a change of one size in needles will change the swatch one-half inch, you may see at once that a needle three sizes larger would get gauge. Or two sizes smaller. Quick and easy, right?

Find whatever needle gets the gauge your pattern calls for.

If your gauge in knitting the swatch is off a smidgeon, and you call it good enough, be prepared for an unpleasant surprise when you try on your finished sweater. One stitch per inch off makes a radical difference. Even a half, third or quarter stitch per inch too much or too little will affect how the sweater fits.
You love making crafts and friends and family members tell you that you should sell them. But the big questions are how and where. There are several tips to successfully sell your handmade crafts. The most important tip is to make quality crafts. The materials you use and the workmanship should be top notch. If you don't have quality, people just aren't going to buy.

The next tip is pricing. You need to price your craft according to similar crafts. You can go to craft fairs and check out similar crafts. You can go online and you can go to craft stores. You will find that some items are priced high and some are priced low. You need to average the prices and then ask yourself, "Would I pay that?" You can always come down on your price but it's more difficult to raise your price. So consider all aspects for pricing.

To sell your crafts at a craft fair, presentation is important. If things are just thrown on a table and it looks like a rummage sale people tend to either walk by or expect to pay dirt cheap. Put a tablecloth on your table and arrange your items neatly. The way you look also plays an important role. You are your own sales rep, dress the part and smile. Also put labels on your crafts or hand out flyers with your name and phone number or website on it. This will bring in repeat customers as well as new customers.

Selling online is another way to successfully sell your handmade crafts. There are sites that cater to crafters and you can set up your own storefront or sell individual items. These sites do charge a fee but your get exposure. Another way to sell is to bring your crafts to a craft store and either have them buy them or put them on consignment.

To successfully sell your handmade crafts takes time. You need to establish yourself and your crafts in the marketplace.

Crafts are a fun way to earn extra money. Enjoy creating new and different crafts.
Pat enjoys many crafts especially decoupage. She is always looking for ways to help other crafters learn new techniques. Visit http://www.countrysmidgen.com for ideas.
Do you like working with your hands? Are you looking for a craft that is kid-friendly? Would you like to restart quickly after an interruption? Do you have little storage space? Do you need simple, simple, simple in your life?

Then this is a hobby for you.

I was looking for a new craft to learn. It had to be a real no-brainer, not very expensive and would use very little space. I stumbled into beading jewelry and it opened a whole new world to me.

Learning to make beaded jewelry is a fun, easy and an affordable hobby. It's a great economy buster to be able to create your own costume jewelry and look like a million bucks.

With three jeweler's tools, two simple beading techniques and a few materials you can make a variety of handcrafted jewelry. Necklaces, bracelets, anklets, earrings, plus so much more are only a weekend away.

But where do you begin? When I first started my search I began at the craft stores. There were no classes being offered in my area and there were no independent bead shops. Browsing the beading departments became very overwhelming and too much to digest. But I was so intrigued with this new found interest that I would not become discouraged. I regrouped and decided to start in the publications department. I discovered several magazines and instruction beading books to choose from. I chose to start with a magazine for two reasons. One, it was more economical and two, I wanted the advertising resources. It proved to be the right path for me. I found lots of good resources and proceeded to order a bead distributor's supply catalog.

With another magazine or two and a supply catalog on hand I drank over the information for the next several months, learning about the beading materials, tools and terminology within these pages.

This process may sound a bit slow or long but it provided, for me, a solid introduction to the components behind jewelry making and laid the ground work for moving into the next phase of learning the beading techniques.

If you are at a beginner's stage and feel overwhelmed by all the selection in the beading department, as I was, I encourage you to start, at the least, with a beading magazine just to get your toes wet and become a bit familiar with a smaller selection of the components needed to start you down the path into the beading world.

Presenting someone with an Easter basket packed full of beautiful gifts is a lovely idea. In fact, it's the perfect way to give someone a special present that is completely unique to their tastes.

Here are a few pointers that can make your Easter basket one of the happiest memories of Spring.

The Basket

The basket itself is usually of wicker much like those obtainable at any of your local craft centers or shops. They can be large or small, as they need only fit as many items as you wish to include. Once you have obtained your baskets, you can fill their bottoms with paper confetti.

The Contents

Your basket can contain any item or gift you can imagine as long as it fits inside. Common Easter basket inhabitants include treats, desserts and snacks and if the basket's intended recipient is of age, wine or champagne. Each food item included should be individually wrapped and able to survive a bit of time spent waiting to be eaten. Chocolate bunnies, eggs and other delectable candies are old classic Easter standbys and they are certainly appreciated by the younger crowd.

The nice thing about Easter baskets is that they are so easily adapted to individuals. You ought to keep this in mind as you prepare your gift basket, remembering that some children or adults may have allergies to certain foods and ingredients. For these recipients, good alternatives to confections include things like notepads, writing utensils, and other inexpensive gifts that are sure to see use.

The Presentation

Now that your baskets are all full, how is are all of those good Easter offerings going to stay secure? The best way to accomplish this is using clear wrapping plastic to cover the basket completely. This has the added advantage of allowing your Easter basket's lucky recipient to see all of the enjoyable things inside immediately, adding to the fun and excitement of receiving such a wonderful gift. A bow on top of the wrapped package completes the effect with a subtle touch that will make your Easter basket one of the best they've had! Happy Easter!
